Crepe Records – Fashion & Music

Hoard-Records-not-Clothes--Crepe-Records

Fashion and music have long had strong links and collaborations between the two industries are common. For the founders of ethical fashion label Crepe Records music was where it all began and continues to be a major part of the both the designs produced and the way they run the business.

Joint Founder Manisha has always had a love of music and art. It was while she was studying Engineering at Bristol University in the 90’s that her love of house music grew. She started her record collection as a student, despite not having enough spare cash to buy a record player but eventually taught herself how to DJ by buying a set of second hand decks from a friend.

Justin’s collection of music from all genres and corners of the Earth is apparently vast. He has spent a lot of his time travelling the globe to various music festivals to experience all kinds of sounds, “Lake of Stars” in Malawi is his all time favourite.

After a second date at a Chilly Gonzales Gig, Manisha and Justin had a pancake brunch in a cafe in South-West London and it was there that they had an idea. They dreamt of creating a lifestyle brand that mixed both of their passions – music and fashion. With the pancakes reminding them of both a vinyl record and crepe material, the name Crepe Records was born.

From the beginning both founders wanted to make sure the brand was based on sound principles along with a close association with music. The result is a range of music inspired clothing ethically sourced and produced. They only work with the best suppliers who care about people and the environment. All of the designs are hand-drawn in their studio in Forest Hill and screen-printed in London.

I chose the Disco Snail t-shirt in black and it arrived beautifully packaged and branded. Justin and Manisha understand how important it is to produce and sell more than just an item of clothing. The products may be only t-shirts but the story, their passion for what they do, the designs and the attention to care and detail, along with their principles, are what makes it so much more than just a t-shirt. The t-shirt is also really soft and well-cut making it a pleasure to wear.

With so much online competition and choice out there, fashion retail has become more about buying into an ideal or principle than just purchasing something physical, which is not a new thing for big brands. It is only relatively recently however, that small independent companies can produce and promote products to such a wide audience. I wish Crepe Records every success for the future and look forward to their next collection of designs and mixes – I’m already loving Alaska by Maggie Rogers on the Chimp DJ’s Top 5 Summer Tracks Mix
