Personalised jewellery maker
I met the lovely Melinda Mulcahy in Cowbridge recently when I wandered into her studio and shop, and heard her speaking to a customer. As a Welsh girl who’s spent half her life in Australia, I’m always told I have a bit of an Aussie twang to my accent. None of us really know how we sound of course, but when I heard Melinda talking I thought that must be what I sound like! So we began talking, and the similarities of our backgrounds and amount of time spent in both Wales and Australia are amazing! You never know who you’ll meet and I think that’s one of the most exciting things about life.
What drew me into Melinda’s shop were the lovely silver personalised pieces she makes, that are simple and really beautiful. Her story is pretty interesting too, coming from a family of makers and crafters in Cronulla, Sydney, and teaching herself the art of metals-mithing, she travelled to India and China to source some of her materials and to learn about new ways of making jewellery. She’s been selling her handmade pieces online since 2003 and has been featured in Grazia and Glamour magazines, amongst others.
Some of her new designs include some really unique pieces too like this Turquoise Spike Gemstone Gold Vermeil Stacking Ring.
Personalised accessories have been popular for some time, including offerings from some of the high street brands, but it’s nice to know that there are still the small independent businesses like Melinda’s that are making it truly personal, on a small and very bespoke scale.
I’ve got my eye on one of the silver plectrum pendants for someone for Christmas, but there are loads more designs to choose from on either her website or in her lovely little studio shop at Vale Barn, Verity’s Court, Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan CF71 7AJ.
